A meeting was held in Hanoi on April 11 to encourage people of all social strata to take part in blood donation campaigns.

Every year, Hanoi-based hospitals lack a sufficient quantity of blood to save patients, and blood donations are considered an effective solution to ease the shortage.

In 2009, the city collected nearly 62,000 units, meeting 88.5 percent of its yearly target. Several blood donation campaigns were launched in the past three months, and a considerable amount was collected to treat patients.

This is the first time Hanoi has overcome blood shortages during the traditional Lunar New Year festival, which often sees an increase in traffic accidents, said doctors.

However, the amount collected only meets 40 percent of the demand and many patients have lost their lives as a result of blood shortages.

“We should pay special attention to unfortunate patients by giving your blood at voluntary blood donation venues,” said Hanoi Vice Mayor Dao Van Binh. “Your good deeds will help save thousands of people in need and bring happiness to their families and many others.”

The same day, more than 2,000 Youth Union members and university students in HCM City took part in a blood donation campaign.
