Almost 700 overseas Vietnamese returning from 21 countries and territories attended a Lunar New Year meeting jointly held by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the HCM City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs on February 4.
Addressing the meeting, the Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee, Le Hoang Quan, praised contributions made by Vietnamese people living both in and outside the country to the socio-economic development of HCM City in particular and Vietnam in general.
He said the event is seen as an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese not only to enjoy the traditional festival but also to witness changes happening across the country. “HCM City will create favourable conditions for overseas Vietnamese to contribute to the country’s development,” he added.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Thai, a Frenchman of Vietnamese origin, stressed the significance of joint efforts in brainpower and finance by domestic and overseas Vietnamese to transform Vietnam into a developed country.
Foreign remittance sent to Vietnam through HCM City banks reached US$2.36 billion in the first nine months of 2009. Overseas Vietnamese have raised charitable funds worth VND12.2 billion.
