The Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) has directed the Education Publishing House to present some new textbooks free of charge and offer discounts of 10-12 percent on textbook prices for students in difficult circumstances.
Under the direction, textbooks will be provided free of charge to more than 1.7 million students and over 1 million more will receive discount vouchers.
The MoET said that Vietnam now has more than 1.6 million beneficiary students facing difficulties in remote areas. In the 2008-2009 school year, more than 1.6 million sets of textbooks will be presented free of charge to these students.
The Ministry has also asked the Education Publishing House to spend over VND5 billion to grant free books to 70,000 students who are children of war invalids or the families of martyrs. In addition, more than VND3.5 billion will be spent on buying 120,000 second-hand textbooks to support poor students.
