Over 14 rare wild animals released back into nature
VOV.VN - The Save Vietnam's Wildlife (SVW) has announced that it has co-operated with relevant agencies in order to release a total of 14 rescued rare animals back into the wild.
The animals include 11 Java pangolins, also known as the Malaysian or Sunda pangolin, along with three Asian small-clawed otters.
The majority of them were rescued from wildlife trafficking rings or were from locals who voluntarily handed over the animals to rangers.
According to the SVW, the rescued animals underwent a quarantine for at least 30 days in order to monitor their health, after which they were then assessed for re-release conditions based on criteria such as health and capacity of self-defence in the wild.
Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) belongs to the Group IB of rare wild animals which are restricted from being held in captivity, hunted, or used for commercial purposes.
Meanwhile, Java pangolin is listed as an endangered species in the Vietnamese Red Book. The wild population has steadily decreased over the years due to illegal hunting and trading for meat and traditional medicines.
