Norway has committed nearly US$3 million to Vietnam's 2007 educational programme to help the country’s education system catch up with other countries in the world.

An agreement to this effect was signed in Hanoi on December 1 by Deputy Minister of Finance Tran Xuan Ha and Norwegian Ambassador Kjell Storlkken.

Deputy Minister Ha expressed thanks to international donors, especially Norway, for their contributions to Vietnam's achievements in education.

For her part, Hege Solbakken, State Secretary of the Norwegian Prime Minister's Office, praised Vietnam for increasing the level State budget for education to 20 percent with a view to achieving considerable progress in this field.

Ms Hege said she hopes that Norway's aid will alleviate the plight of children in difficult circumstances, especially children of ethnic minorities.

This is the second consecutive year that Norway has extended financial assistance to Vietnam's educational programme.
