Northern Vietnam heatwave eases as heavy rain forecast from May 16
VOV.VN - After several days of intense heat with temperatures exceeding 39°C in some areas, weather conditions across many parts of Vietnam are beginning to cool as thunderstorms are expected to return from the evening of May 16.
The widespread heatwave in Northern Vietnam could end from May 17, reported the National Centre for Meteorological Forecasting.
According to the latest forecast, Northern Vietnam will continue to experience hot weather on May 16, with temperatures ranging from 35 to 37°C and some areas exceeding 37°C.
However, unlike previous days, scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast to develop during the late afternoon and evening, with localised areas likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The ongoing heatwave has been considered one of the most severe since the beginning of the hot season this summer. On May 15, several localities recorded temperatures close to or above 39°C.
Notably, Son Hoa in Dak Lak province reached 39.7°C, while Ba To in Quang Ngai recorded 38.6°C and Dong Hoi reached 38.8°C.
Meteorological experts said a broader wave of thunderstorms is expected to affect Northern Vietnam from the night of May 16, significantly lowering temperatures. The heatwave across the Red River Delta and surrounding areas is anticipated to end from May 17.
Beyond the north, areas stretching from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang, as well as parts of the south-central region, are also expected to see scattered thunderstorms in the coming days. Hot weather in Central Vietnam could gradually ease from around May 18.
Despite the cooler conditions, meteorological experts continue to warn of dangerous weather associated with evening thunderstorms, including tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong wind gusts.
Residents are advised to remain cautious during periods of severe weather, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash floods, falling trees and power disruptions caused by thunderstorms.
