Northern Vietnam braces for widespread heatwave after rainy days

VOV.VN - After several days of heavy rain and thunderstorms, Northern Vietnam is set to experience a widespread heatwave starting July 16, with daytime temperatures expected to exceed 36°C in many areas.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms have continued to hit the northern mountainous region over the past few days, with localised downpours ranging from 15–30 mm and even surpassing 70 mm in some localities. This weather pattern has raised concerns over landslides and flash floods, especially in steep terrains where the soil is saturated due to previous rain.

Localities in the north-central, central, Central Highland and southern regions have also experienced thunderstorms, receiving 10–30 mm, occasionally above 60 mm of rain.

Starting July 15, weather conditions in Northern Vietnam are forecast to shift significantly, with localised heat appearing in some areas. Temperatures are expected to surpass 35°C, causing oppressive heat during midday and early afternoon.

By evening and night, the northern mountainous provinces will still experience scattered showers and thunderstorms, creating a marked contrast between day and night weather.

The peak of the heatwave is forecast to occur between July 16 and 17, when widespread hot weather is forecast across the northern region. However, this heatwave is not likely to last long. From the night of July 17 to July 22, showers and thunderstorms are expected to return, with locally heavy rain in some areas.

On July 15, localised heat is also anticipated in the north-central and central regions. Between July 15 and 23, sunny and hot weather is likely across provinces from Thanh Hoa to Hue and along the South Central Coast, with the most intense heat forecast between July 16–18.

While the northern and central regions brace for heat, the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam will continue to see scattered showers and thunderstorms over the next 10 days. Rainfall is anticipated mainly in the afternoon and evening, often accompanied by lightning and strong gusts.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated on weather developments, take precautions against heat-related health risks, and remain vigilant for potential flooding or landslides, especially in mountainous localities.
