Nine-month unemployment rate hits 2.67%
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s unemployment rate during the nine months of the year reached 2.67%, of which the rate in urban areas and rural areas stood at 3.58% and 2.15%, respectively, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).
The information was unveiled by the GSO’s report during a press conference held on September 29 to announce socio-economic statistics from the third quarter and the nine months of the year.
During the event, Nguyen Thi Huong, director general of the GSO, revealed that the complicated developments caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have negatively impacted the local labour market and the employment situation.
The number of workers active within the national economy decreased sharply compared to the previous quarter, with an unemployment rate of working age citizens at the highest level since the first quarter of last year.
Furthermore, the reviewed period also saw the country’s workforce aged 15 and over at 50.4 million people, a drop of 200,000 people compared to the same period from last year.
The GSO’s report went on to reveal that the complicated developments caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly affected people's lives, noting that the Government has provided approximately VND13.8 trillion in funding for affected people, of which VND11.4 trillion has been used for the worst hit 23 provinces and cities nationwide.
The Government has also extracted roughly 136,349.6 tonnes of rice from the national reserve in an effort to support more than 2.4 million households across the country.
Moreover, more than 29.3 million health insurance cards have been delivered to people for free medical examination and treatment.
