New Year meetings for OVs

(VOV) - Two hundred returning overseas Vietnamese people (OVs) gathered in central Danang City to celebrate the Lunar New Year on January 24.

Municipal People’s Committee Chairman Van Huu Chien summarised Danang’s 2013 achievements and pledged city resources to assisting OVs keep in touch with their homeland.

Chien said Danang’s nearly 18,000 OVs have made remarkable contributions to the city’s construction in important fields including investment, healthcare, education, science, technology, and humanitarian activities.

He noted that since 2000, the city has received remittances exceeding US$125 million—more than US$80 million of which was registered last year.

The northern province of Thai Nguyen held a get-together for its visiting expatriate community on the same day.

The OVs, home for the Tet holiday, were briefed on the locality’s socio-economic development, poverty reduction, and national defence and security contributions, and its relationships with foreign and domestic municipalities and international organisations.

While discussing Thai Nguyen’s investment incentives and its foreign direct investment (FDI) projects, participants shared their experiences lecturing at several of the province’s universities and colleges.

Thai Nguyen was among 2013’s national leaders in FDI attraction, registering a total of 44 FDI businesses.
