Nearly 66,000 buffaloes and pigs, and around 155,000 poultry were culled in 2011.

The Animal Health Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said the livestock was infected with foot and mouth disease, blue-ear pig disease and bird flu.

Foot-and mouth disease spread to 35 provinces and cities across the country with higher losses than in the previous year, while blue-ear pig disease seems to be on the decline.

The Department said that these diseases are likely to spread more widely during the upcoming Lunar New Year festival (Tet) and the post-Tet season due to the cold weather and illegal importing, transportation, and slaughtering of livestock.
