The National Steering Committee for Bird Flu Control launched a month-long campaign to prevent the possible recurrence of avian influenza on September 8.

The committee will send medical workers to disinfect slaughterhouses and rural poultry markets while veterinary teams will closely monitor the transport, slaughtering and processing of poultry.

The committee has asked local authorities to strengthen poultry quarantine methods in key border areas as bird flu has been reported in neighbouring countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and China. Accordingly, teams will be dispatched to promote vaccination and encourage farmers to complete vaccination plans on schedule. The committee has also called on drug companies to ensure enough vaccine for the year.

Poultry breeding farms and households have been urged to clear wild grass around farms, burn garbage, clear sewers and disinfect backyard farms to stop a possible recurrence of bird flu.

No bird flu outbreaks have been reported so far this year, according to the committee.
