Doctors at the National Hospital of Paediatrics in Hanoi have performed a bone marrow transplant on an eight-year-old-boy, the third operation of its kind at the hospital.

Vu Hoang Lam, from central Thanh Hoa province, received 50ml of marrow from his 14-year-old brother Vu Hoang Son.

According to Deputy Director of the hospital Nguyen Van Loc, the blood groups of the donor and the recipient were different, so surgeons had to separate red and white blood cells in a complicated process.

The health of both the patient and the donor were stable after the ten-hour transplant on June 9.

The hospital conducted the first two marrow transplants on a seven-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl in August and November last year respectively.
