State President Nguyen Minh Triet has urged relevant agencies, armed forces and people to raise alert and be prepared to cope with natural disasters this year.

Mr Triet made the request in a letter sent to Vietnamese people, soldiers, armed forces and the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control at all levels to mark the traditional Day for Flood and Storm Control and Disaster Mitigation (May 22).

He said that since the beginning of 2007, Vietnam has experienced abnormal weather phenomena, including tropical low pressure, whirlwinds and hailstorms, early heat waves and low water levels in major river systems. The water level in the Red River in Hanoi receded to a 100-year record low, stressed the President.

He asked functional bodies, people, officials and soldiers nationwide to raise the alert, put warning systems in place and make plans to effectively cope with natural disasters so as to minimise human and property losses.
