NA Chairwoman attends tree planting ceremony

VOV.VN - National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan attended a tree planting ceremony within the framework of the "1 Million Trees for Vietnam Fund" programme in Ngoc Hien district in the southernmost Ca Mau province on May 2.

Nearly 100,000 trees worth more than VND800 million were planted at the national trig point GPS 0001 and along coastal areas in Dat Mui commune, Ngoc Hien and Cai Nuoc districts to prevent droughts and saltwater intrusion.

The "1 Million Trees for Vietnam Fund" programme was launched in 2012 by the Vietnam Milk Company (Vinamilk) in collaboration with the Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) with the aim of increasing the number of trees grown in localities nationwide in an effort to improve living conditions for Vietnamese people.

Over the past six years, nearly 580,000 trees of different varieties have been planted with a total value of about VND8 billion.

Vo Tuan Nhan, deputy Minister of the MoNRE, said the program aims to realise a guideline for the socialization of environment protection work, especially stepping up tree planting, management, and protection to improve the air quality and environment in provinces and cities. It encourages communities to put forth more initiatives and pay greater attention to tree planting across the country, said Mr Nhan.

On the occasion, the 'Rising Vietnam' Milk Fund presented 66,000 glasses of milk valued at VND450 million to more than 700 children, and granted 100 scholarships worth VND1 million each to disadvantaged children in Ca Mau province.
