Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has affirmed that the murder case of Vietnamese student Vu Anh Tuan in St. Petersburg has not yet closed and that all documents relating to the case will be transferred to the Supreme Court of Russia.

In a letter dated November 13 to Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem, Mr Lavrov said the St. Petersburg Procuracy has planned to lodge an appeal against the

St. Petersburg Court
's verdict.

In the letter, he wrote, "We share the grief of the family of Vu Anh Tuan and the feelings of the Vietnamese people and those Vietnamese who are working and studying in our country. It is obvious and essential that the case should be made clear and the culprits punished as soon as possible. Russia will take all necessary measures to ensure security and prevent illegal acts against foreigners, including Vietnamese nationals who are living legally in Russia. This issue is always of great concern to law enforcement bodies and Russian leaders, including those at the top."

On November 5, Mr Khiem sent a letter to Mr Lavrov requesting the Russians to pay attention to the trial of the accused murderers of Vu Anh Tuan and follow-up on the case in order to find the culprits and punish them appropriately.

Vu Anh Tuan, a 20-year-old student at St. Petersburg State Technological University, was attacked in October 2004 by a group of youngsters on the street when he was walking home. One of the assailants stabbed Tuan with a knife, wounding him fatally.

St Petersburg Court Jury decided to acquit all those accused of killing the Vietnamese student at a trial on October 17.
