Northern and north-central provinces have experienced heavy downpours over the past few days due to a tropical low pressure, which could trigger landslides and flash floods in mountainous areas, the Central Hydro-Metrological Forecasting Centre has warned.

Heavy downpours triggered mudslides in the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai on July 29, disrupting traffic flows on Road 39 from Van Chan district to Mu Cang Chai district. The Road Management Board dispatched personnel and bulldozers to the site to clear up the mudslide. The section was open to traffic again in the afternoon of July 30.

The centre warned of more landslides when heavy rain will continue to pour in the coming days.

The rising water levels also forced the Hoa Binh Hydro-Electric Power Plant to open two flood gates and the Tuyen Quang Hydro-Electric Power Plant to open eight flood gates.

The National Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control and the National Committee for Search and Rescue asked their branches in northern and north-central mountainous localities to dispatch workers to dangerous areas to help local people prevent possible landslides and flash floods, while taking measures to ensure the safety of dams and reservoirs.

As water levels on the Red and Thai Binh Rivers are rising quickly, localities were required to keep a close watch on the embankment system along the two river systems and prepare all necessary equipment in place to cope with the natural disasters.
