Mortar round explosion kills 6 in central Vietnam

VOV.VN - Three Vietnamese children are among the six killed on Friday, August 18, by an explosion of munitions left over from the bitter battles of the Vietnam War with the US, reports Sai Gon Giai Phong Online.

A Vietnamese official says a group of children are believed to have been playing with an unexploded mortar round when it blew up, killing three of them and three adults who were in the vicinity.

Police spokespersons say the deaths took place in the district of Khanh Son in the central province of Khanh Hoa, a hub of military activity during the Vietnam War with the US, particularly in Cam Ranh Bay and at the Nha Trang Air Base.

They say other adults and children were wounded and taken to a hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Decades after the conflict ended, Vietnam remains littered with unexploded munitions left over from years of the war, which along with roadside bombs have killed or wounded at least 100,000 since the end of hostilities.
