About 700,000 poor households (2.9 million people) who are in dire need of food have enjoyed government financial support of VND200,000 each on the occasion of the Lunar New Year festival.
In addition, according to the Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, about 1.3 million disadvantaged people have received gifts worth VND200,000 each from the government.
Apart from the government support, local authorities have granted gifts to the poor households and disadvantaged people. Ho Chi Minh City took the lead with VND41 billion, followed by Hanoi with VND18 billion and Quang Nam with VND14 billion.
Local organisations, enterprises and benefactors have also visited needy people and offered them gifts for Tet.
