More flooding threatens central provinces

Torrential rains are forecast for central provinces from Quang Binh southward to Phu Yen and the northern part of the Tay Nguyen Central Highlands on December 4 and 5, posing threat of widespread flooding.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, a new cold wave in combination with eastern wind will bring big rains to the said region, pushing up water levels in local rivers.

The centre warns of high risks of flooding in low-lying areas, worsening the situation of some districts in Binh Dinh and Phu Yen provinces which have been submerged over the past weeks.

Meanwhile, mountainous areas must look out for landslide, the centre said.

Many reservoirs in central and Central Highlands regions have been full to capacity, adding to the threat of flooding.

Rains are forecast to reduce on December 6.

Binh Dinh province reported on late December 3 that more than 2,750 households are being affected by floods in the province.

The central and Central Highland regions have been under rains throughout November, with many areas having been submerged for weeks.

In early November, the southern coastal region was hit by storm Damrey, one of the worst storms to strike the region in years.

The typhoon and subsequent floods claimed 89 lives and left 18 missing and 174 others injured in central and Central Highlands localities as of November 7.
