A national conference on traffic safety was held in Hanoi on January 12 to review the traffic safety situation in 2009 and devise tasks for 2010 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai, Minister of Transport and Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety Ho Nghia Dung.

In his speech, Mr Hai praised the National Committee for Traffic Safety (NCTS) provinces and cities for effectively implementing Government decrees on traffic order and safety.

Ensuring traffic safety is a long-term task that needs many effective and sustainable measures, therefore, ministries, sectors and localities should closely work with the NCTS to come up with solutions to ensure traffic safety by intensifying promotional campaigns and raising public awareness of adherence to traffic law.

It is essential to revise and finalise the legal framework on traffic order and safety, properly handle violations of traffic law and socialise transport infrastructure facilities, said Mr Hai

Participants in the conference approved four targets for traffic safety in 2010 and underlined the need to reduce traffic accident-related deaths by at least 5 percent in 2010 and tackle traffic jams in Hanoi and HCM City.

On the occasion, the NCTS presented awards to units and individuals who had successfully fulfilled their tasks over the past year.
