A "Month for the Poor" campaign was launched in Hanoi on October 17 to raise funds in support of the poor living in areas affected by the recent Typhoon Xangsane.

Speaking at the ceremony, President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Pham The Duyet called on local and foreign businesses, organisations and individuals to lend a helping hand to the poor. He urged ministries and relevant agencies to work closely with municipal and provincial authorities to launch various fund-raising activities in conformity with local conditions.

At the ceremony, 20 businesses handed over VND500 million to help repair the General Hospital in Nam Dong district, Thua Thien-Hue province – an area mostly inhabited by Co Tu ethnic minority people.

Over the past six years, the Fund for the Poor has helped repair and build 418,594 houses for the poor nationwide.
