Measles cases fall sharply, HCM City nears end of measles outbreak

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City is expected to soon declare an end to the measles outbreak in many wards and communes following a sharp fall in the number of infections in recent times.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, the number of measles cases in the city has been rapidly declining across all age groups since the beginning of the year. Between March 17–23, 50 wards and communes across 13 districts and Thu Duc City had reported no new measles cases for three consecutive weeks or more.

The Department has reviewed and submitted reports to the municipal administration, recommending the official declaration of the end to the measles outbreak in 22 wards and communes that meet the criteria.

After declaring the outbreak over, the Department said it will continue surveillance efforts to detect and respond to suspected cases in the community and schools to prevent a resurgence. Vaccination campaigns will also remain active to ensure that children receive the two-dose measles vaccine and that catch-up vaccinations are provided for those who missed their doses.

Statistics show, since the beginning of the measles outbreak, hospitals in the city have treated 8,087 measles cases from local districts and 12,226 measles cases from other provinces. Among the 8,087 cases within the city, 151 patients required respiratory support, accounting for 1.6% of the total. There were seven fatalities, and the deceased patients were children with congenital diseases or severe underlying conditions who had not been vaccinated prior to infection.

The first measles cases were logged in Ho Chi Minh City in May 2024 after more than two years without any reported infections. The municipal administration then declared a measles outbreak citywide three months later, providing the legal basis for implementing comprehensive control measures.

The local health sector launched a vaccination campaign in August for children aged 1 to 10 and then a school vaccination campaign in September. As of March 23, 2025, a total of 280,244 measles vaccine doses had been administered across the city, with 100% vaccination coverage for children aged 1 to 5, and 99.51% vaccination coverage for children aged 6 to 10.

Why does measles progress rapidly and become dangerous?

VOV.VN - Since the beginning of the year, Vietnam has recorded over 42,000 suspected measles cases, including five related deaths, yet many parents remain complacent and unaware of the severe risks the disease poses to young children.
