The Department of Survey and Mapping, under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, has officially launched a map of Vietnam on the Internet. According to the International Steering Committee for Global Mapping (ISCGM), Vietnam is one of the first 30 countries to finish uploading its map on the Internet.

A reporter of Radio the Voice of Vietnam interviewed Le Minh Tam, vice director of the Department of Survey and Mapping, on the event.

VOV: Can you give a brief introduction on the Vietnam map which has just been launched on the Internet?

Mr Tam: The map of Vietnam is part of the United Nations Global Map and set up with a scale of 1:1,000,000 in line with common regulations of the International Executive Board. The map comprises eight spectrums of information relating to the country’s hydrography system, including irrigation systems, river transport routes and aquatic administrative frontiers.

VOV: How significant is it for Vietnam to launch the map on the Internet?

Mr Tam: After Vietnam takes part in the programme, the country will receive a free 1:1,000,000 map for the purposes of researching and observing environmental changes around the globe. The country will also use the map to cooperate with other countries in socio-economic development. In addition, Vietnam’s participation in the UN Global Map programme is a good opportunity to introduce the map of Vietnam based on the viewpoints of the Vietnamese Party and State.

VOV: Where can people access the map of Vietnam on the net?

Mr Tam: People can use the map of Vietnam on the website www.iscgm.org for non-commercial purposes. Otherwise, they have to ask for the ISCGM’s executive board.

VOV: Thank you.
