Mandela Day was initiated by the charitable foundation of Nelson Mandela, which called the anti-apartheid icon’s birthday on July 18 as an international day to do good deeds to honour Nelson Mandela’s life and cause.
The foundation also launched a global call to action for people around the world to recognise their individual power to change the world for the better.
Celebrations were to be held from Johannesburg to New York in the honour of Nelson Mandela, who was South Africa's first black president and turned 91 on Saturday.
He stepped down from the post of South African President in 1999.
The former South African President has been worldwide honoured for his tireless energy to fight for peace, anti-apartheid campaign, and against HIV/AIDS.
He still extensively takes part in campaigns against poverty, for the rights of children, and AIDS awareness.
