A seminar entitled “youth with HIV/AIDS” held in Hanoi on August 21 by the General Office for Population and Family Planning under the Ministry of Health attracted representatives from 14 provinces and cities across the country.

Participants discussed such issues as the circumstances of Vietnamese youth infected by HIV/AIDS and why Vietnamese youth are so easily infected. HIV carriers in Vietnam are mainly between 20 and 39 years old. More than half of them are between 15 and 24 years old. The main contracting cause is lack of knowledge and life experience, leading to unsafe sex and a high risk of infection.

A representative from the Ministry of Health said that in 2008 male HIV carriers outnumbered female carriers 5 to 1. The 9 provinces with the highest number of HIV/AIDS carriers are Dien Bien, Son La, Hanoi, Thai nguyen, Yen Bai, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City and Ba Ria-Vung Tau.

Doctor Nguyen Xuan Phuong from the Department for HIV/AIDS Prevention said that one of the best ways to prevent HIV/AIDS is to spread information about the need change behavior. It is none other than State agencies and employers that must involve themselves in this work.
