New houses and public structures have been built, and the locals’ cultural and spiritual lives have been improved. Particularly through the programme of planting trees on sandy islands all wasteland and coral beach areas have been re-greened. Visitors are now surprised to see the sandy and windy islands, often hit by the blazing sun and drought become ever greener.
The tree planting and caring movement has been maintained and relaunched each year, particularly during the lunar New Year festival, to welcome spring and the Party, the World Environment Day (June 5), and National Day (September 2). On green islands, local people and border-guards have taken good care of the existing trees while planting other trees which can stand the adverse weather.
On bare islands where waste land is available, they have actively implemented Project 327 to pilot new varieties which are resistant to drought and salinity such as casuarinas and coconuts. The locals have also cultivated seedlings and layered trees which can survive despite harsh environments on the islands such as maple, poon and tropical almond in order to grow them at all islands. In so doing, the Truong Sa island district has contributed to successfully implementing Project 327.
Every year the island district launches the arbor movement when the weather is favouable. Specific tasks have been assigned to each army unit and each residential quarter. Each person has to plant and take good care of at least one or two trees. The Youth Union’s shock force launches its own campaigns such as “Youth volunteer to plant and take care of trees and clean up the sea and island environment”. Successful models such as “Youth garden”, “Youth tree”, “Youth road” and others have been replicated by people in the entire island district.
The arbor festival is particularly launched during the lunar New Year festival (Tet) by people and borderguards in the Truong Sa island district to realise President Ho Chi Minh’s teachings to plant more trees to turn the country into an everlasting spring. In the competing momentum to welcome the new spring and the Party, they have planted anew and taken good care of hundreds of trees making the movement to regreen the sandy islands routine and effective.
With these efforts, the people and border-guards in Truong Sa island district have so far planted and taken good care of thousands of trees of different varieties, particularly maple, poon and tropical almond trees. They have maintained the movement “Planting trees in spring to be grateful to Uncle Ho” to plant more trees to improve the eco-environment on the islands and the lives of local people and border-guards, helping them fulfill their task of defending the homeland’s territorial integrity.
