Lyrid meteor shower to light up the skies on April 22

VOV.VN - Vietnamese stargazers will be treated to a night time display as the Lyrid meteor shower is set to streak across the skies on the evening of April 22 and early morning of April 23.

Dang Vu Tuan Son, president of the Vietnam Astronomy and Cosmology Association (VACA), says stargazers should expect to see around 15-20 meteors pass every hour at the peak of the shower which will last through the night of April 22 and into the early morning of April 23.

With the best weather conditions, as many as 20 meteors per hour will be seen in areas with less light pollution.

Meteors should be visible in many parts of the sky but to identify the Lyra constellation where they will appear most, viewers should look for the three brightest stars towards the east.

The phenomena can be safely viewed with the naked eye. However, observers should find a spot away from the lights of the city and high-rise buildings to give themselves the best chance of seeing the Lyrid meteor shower.
