Localities plan resident evacuations as tropical depressions come near

VOV.VN - Central provinces have been urged to make mass evacuation plans as they are braced for two subsequent tropical depressions that will dump heavy rain on the region.

Rain will lash north-central and central provinces heavily in the next 10 days with rainfall of between 500-1,000mm or more to be recorded in the region, warned Mai Van Khiem, director of the National Centre of Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

Khiem made the warning after informing an urgent meeting of the Central Committee on Natural Disasters Prevention and Control in Hanoi on October 6 on the development of the upcoming two tropical depressions in the region.

The first tropical depression is forming in the East Sea and is forecast to make landfall on October 7. It will cause heavy downpours of 500-700mm in provinces spanning from Ha Tinh to Quang Ngai.

Another tropical depression is likely to hit central provinces after October 11 that is expected to bring in heavy rain again and cause severe floods in the region.

With a total rainfall of up to 1,000mm, central localities should be well prepared for adverse weather patterns in the coming days, Khiem said.

Tran Quang Hoai, deputy director of the Central Committee on Natural Disasters Prevention and Control, proposed that local localities devise plans to evacuate residents from low-lying areas that are prone to flashfloods and landslides.

Measures should be in place to protect people’s lives as well as public works, aquatic farms and reservoirs among others, said Hoai.

He also asked local residents in the low-lying areas to reinforce their houses and stockpile daily necessities in case they are isolated by rising floodwaters.
