Vietnam’s largest Khmer sanctum was inaugurated at Ghositaram Pagoda in the southern province of Bac Lieu on March 12.
The chamber, which is 36.3 m tall and covers 427.5sq.m., took nine years to build. It combines distinctive features of Theravada Buddhism of the Khmer and modern architecture.
It took artisans four years to carve dozens of dragon around the tower on the top roof, and hundreds of different symbols of Theravada Buddhism inside and outside the structure.
The project also included two flagpoles, two towers to contain remains of the dead, a crematorium and a wharf. It cost builders more than VND10 billion to complete the project, using funds contributed by the pagoda, the State and Buddhist donors.
The pagoda, built in 1860, is considered the cradle of learning by monks and nuns. It has so far trained more than 3,500 Buddhist students.
