Korean universities encouraged to open campuses in Vietnam
VOV.VN - Vietnam has proposed that universities from the Republic of Korea (RoK) study the possibility of opening branch campuses in Vietnam in order to expand educational cooperation and attract more reputable international higher education institutions to operate in the country.
The proposal was raised by Acting Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son during a meeting with RoK Minister of Education Choi Kyo Jin and his delegation in Hanoi on March 5.
At the meeting, Son affirmed that educational cooperation is one of the key pillars of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the Republic of Korea. As bilateral relations continue to expand across many areas, strengthening cooperation in higher education is expected to contribute significantly to the development of high-quality human resources as well as to scientific research and innovation.
According to the Acting Minister, Vietnam is implementing a number of policies to improve the quality of education and deepen international integration in the field of higher education. Under its education development strategy toward 2030, the country aims to raise the quality of early childhood and general education to advanced levels in Asia while strengthening the capacity of higher education institutions.
Vietnam has set the goal of having at least eight universities ranked among the top 200 in Asia and aims for at least one higher education institution to be listed among the world’s top 100 universities in certain fields. In this context, attracting reputable international universities to establish branch campuses in Vietnam is expected to help improve the quality of tertiary education and create more opportunities for Vietnamese students to study in an international academic environment within the country.
The Acting Minister encouraged Korean universities to explore the possibility of establishing branch campuses in Vietnam, while both sides agreed to promote joint training programmes, particularly in science and technology and in digital education models, ensuring training quality.
Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Training also proposed strengthening cooperation with the RoK in developing high-level human resources, particularly within the framework of Project 89, which focuses on enhancing the capacity of lecturers and administrators at Vietnamese universities.
The two sides also discussed providing more information about academic programmes and expanding scholarship opportunities for Vietnamese doctoral candidates.
Amid the increasing demand for Korean language learning among Vietnamese pupils and students, both sides agreed to continue expanding cooperation in Korean language teacher training, student exchanges, and the effective implementation of Korean language education programs in Vietnam.
Speaking at the meeting, Minister Choi commended Vietnam’s ongoing education reforms and expressed his desire to further strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in developing high-quality human resources, particularly in science and technology, artificial intelligence and semiconductor technology.
He also affirmed that RoK stands ready to expand student exchange programmes and increase scholarship opportunities for Vietnamese students to pursue their studies in Korea.
