Japanese aid to improve livelihoods for ethnic communities in Son La
VOV.VN - Japan recently launched a grant aid project to improve the livelihoods for ethnic minority communities in Son la province, through agriculture and nutrition enhancement.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Ito Naoki and Programme Coordinator Nagino Kosuke at Save the Children Japan, signed the grant agreement between the Embassy of Japan and the organization in Hanoi on October 17.
Funded by the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam and implemented by Save the Children Japan, this marks the third year of the project, focusing on communities in the former Bac Yen and Sop Cop districts.
The project aims to support ethnic minority households in difficult economic conditions by enhancing agricultural production capacity, ensuring food security, increasing agricultural product consumption, and improving nutrition for pregnant women and children.
The total project budget for the three-year implementation period (March 2023 – October 2026) amounts to approximately JPY235 million, of which JPY63 million will be provided under this year’s signing for the third year of implementation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Ambassador Ito Naoki noted the project not only provides direct assistance to local residents but also offers policy recommendations on livelihood development to local authorities.
“We expect the third year of the project to deliver more practical and comprehensive results, helping people achieve a stable and sustainable life,” said the Ambassador.
At the start of the project, 32% of households in the project area were classified as poor, and over 35% of children under two years old were malnourished. To date, 93% of participating households have reported significant improvements in food sources and income.
Programme Coordinator Nagino shared that the project has improved access to healthcare and nutrition services, while enhancing community and local government capacity to sustain and expand the project’s outcomes.
In addition to agricultural activities, the project also provides nutrition counseling, regular health check-ups for pregnant women, promotion of breastfeeding, and establishment of parent groups to share nutrition knowledge. Workshops and experience-sharing sessions have been organised to replicate effective models in other localities.
The ceremony concluded with a commitment from all parties to continue close coordination to ensure the effective implementation of the project’s third-year activities.
