Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Mitsuo Sakaba on October 27 presented gifts from the Japanese government worth US$75,000 to a group of volunteer doctors of the Vietnam Red Cross.

The gifts included ultrasound machines, cardiac pacemakers, biochemical equipment and X-ray devices.

The volunteer doctors will use these devices to provide medical check-ups and treatment services to the poor, people with disabilities, those exposed to Agent Orange/Dioxin, and those living in remote areas across the country.

Every year, 40 volunteer doctors of the group provide free treatment and medicines to these beneficiaries.

Over the past years, thanks to Japanese aid, the Vietnam Red Cross has implemented a mangrove forestation project worth nearly US$4 million in 8 northern provinces, helping local people protect the environment and improve their lives.

Recently, the Japan Red Cross pledged 163,000 Swiss francs in emergency aid to victims of tropical storm Ketsana.
