A programme to raise people's awareness of maternal and child health (MCH) through MCH handbooks with funds from Japan's Children Supporting Society has paid off in Vietnam, assessed a four-day international symposium being held in southern Ben Tre province.
The MCH Handbook programme, which is to provide a close watch on the health of mothers and their babies for several years from pregnancy, was first piloted in one commune of Ben Tre province in 1997 and has quickly expanded to all 160 communes.
It has been combined with a programme on community-based rehabilitation and has brought practical benefits to the localities.
