International donors have donated US$134.6 million since 1999 to help Vietnam carry out activities to fight HIV/AIDS, said a local administration official.

Deputy Minister of Health Trinh Quan Huan reported on using foreign aid for HIV/AIDS control in Vietnam at a conference in Hanoi on December 6.

Twenty-nine foreign-funded projects on HIV/AIDS control have been put under the management of the Ministry of Health. Of the number, 16 projects capitalised at US$5.6 million were completed and the remaining 13 valued at US$97.3 million are being carried out until 2011. Those projects are focused on nine action plans of the National Strategy on HIV/AIDS Control by 2010 and vision 2020.

Foreign organisations also directly helped carry out over 20 projects on HIV/AIDS control with a total funding of over US$6.1 million in various cities and provinces.

However, HIV/AIDS control projects have been carried out mainly in major cities and provinces like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Quang Ninh and Hai Phong. There are still 13 cities and provinces having no project of this kind.

Experts to the conference said that the disbursement rate of fund for HIV/AIDS control was rather high (over 80 percent) but in line with financial regulations and commitments.
