Nearly 150 young people with disabilities from Hanoi and the Republic of Korea will attend a cultural exchange meeting and compete in a computer contest held in Hanoi, according to a press briefing on September 30.

The events, the first of their kind, will open new opportunities for promoting information technology (IT) skills and enhance mutual understanding about the two countries’ culture, as well as the life of disabled people from Vietnam and the Republic of Korea, said the programme organizers.

The people taking part in the programme are to be divided into four groups with mental, visual, listening, and movement disabilities.

The IT contest will take place at the Hanoi National University of Education on October 15, while the culture and arts exchange programme will be held at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology on October 16.

Duong Thi Van, Vice President of the Hanoi Association for People with Disabilities, said the IT contest is aimed at creating a society with no barriers to disabled people’s integration and celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Vietnam’s Law on People with Disabilities took effect on January 1, 2011.
