ILO supports projects to improve commuting safety for garment workers in Vietnam

VOV.VN - The International Labour Organization (ILO) recently announced that three factories in Vietnam have received funding under the Vision Zero Fund’s Road Safety Challenge.

The competition invited factories to propose practical and innovative solutions to improve commuting safety for workers in the garment sector.

According to the ILO, from 11 submissions, the winning factories were selected by a panel of occupational safety and road safety specialists, with guidance from the UN Road Safety Fund, Better Factories Cambodia, and the ILO Office in Vietnam.”

According to the ILO, from 11 submissions, the winning factories were selected by a panel of occupational safety and road safety specialists, with recommendations from the UN Road Safety Fund, Better Factories Cambodia, and the ILO Office in Vietnam.

Ockert Dupper, Programme Manager of the Vision Zero Fund, underlined that traffic accidents remain a serious yet often overlooked issue that affects occupational safety and health. He noted that the challenge helps empower factories to implement practical measures that can save workers’ lives and improve productivity.

In addition, Nneka Henry, Head of the UN Road Safety Fund, emphasized that improving commuting safety protects the lives and livelihoods of workers. She stated that initiatives like this demonstrate how factories are taking proactive roles in ensuring safer daily travel for thousands of employees.

Freetrend Industrial (Vietnam) will launch the program “Your Safety, Our Priority,” including a rapid response team, staggered shifts to ease congestion, monthly bus fare subsidies, and infrastructure upgrades. A feedback channel will help ensure the solutions address the needs of all workers, including pregnant women.
Fuluh Shoes (Vietnam) will pilot a digital commuting safety monitoring system to track accidents and risks, replacing the current manual reporting process.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern New Century Corporation will improve infrastructure, provide training, and engage surrounding communities to promote safer commuting options. The selected projects are expected to benefit tens of thousands of workers, most of whom are women.

According to Huckuntod, through its partnership with the Vision Zero Fund, Nike Inc. aims to reduce traffic and commuting accidents affecting workers across its extended supply chain. She emphasized that the challenge is intended to help workers make informed decisions and take actions to avoid and minimize risks while traveling.

The Vision Zero Fund will provide financial and technical support for project implementation from October 2025 to April 2026. Lessons from these factories will be shared at a global online workshop organized by the Fund, contributing to collective action across the garment and footwear sector.
