Establishing guidelines to achieve a safe and healthy working environment for Vietnamese workers is the focus of an agreement signed in Hanoi on September 25.

The agreement between the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is a fore-runner for a project entitled "Enhancing Capacity of Occupational Safety and Health Training in Vietnam".

The project is an effort to redress occupational accidents and diseases by crafting a long-term strategy and work plan for occupational safety and health training. From this, training courses will be organised to target different segments of the working population.

MoLISA's reports have revealed that occupational accidents and diseases in Vietnam have been on the rise at an average annual rate of 17.38 percent in the past five years.

The funding of the three-year project will come from the Luxembourg Government's aid grant of US$530,000.
