To support cities in this effort, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) launched the Earth Hour City Challenge in 2012. The global initiative recognizes the cities taking holistic and credible actions to build a sustainable future for their residents.
Hue’s plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2020 are supported by an inspiring action plan for buildings, renewables, and mobility, said Van Ngoc Thinh, regional country director for WWF.
The city’s action plan includes implementing seven action plans, focusing on green areas, green tourism development, effective water and waste treatment, community intelligent lighting systems, using renewable energy and environmentally friendly construction materials.
In recognition of Hue’s achievements, Mr Thinh on behalf of the WWF on June 28 presented a certificate to recognize Hue as a national green city contestant for 2016.
This year, 125 cities from 21 countries around the globe are in the running for the ‘We Love Cities’ award and Hue is the first city in Vietnam to have been selected to participate in it.
On June 30, the WWF will announce the names of the winners of the contest.
