A national campaign to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV was launched in Hanoi on August 28 by the Ministry of Health.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong asked the Ministry of Health to instruct hospitals and medical centres across the country to offer services such as HIV testing, HIV counselling and supplying ARV drugs to all pregnant women to ensure the success of the campaign.

He also called on international organisations and non-governmental organisations to support Vietnam in achieving UN Millennium Development Goal on combating HIV/AIDS.

Under the national programme on prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, by 2010 about 90 percent of pregnant women will be provided with HIV/AIDS counselling services, 60 percent of pregnant women will undergo voluntary HIV tests, and 100 percent of HIV-infected pregnant women will have access to comprehensive service packages to prevent them from transmitting the deadly virus to their unborn babies.
