Heatwave intensifies, temperatures exceed 38°C across multiple regions

VOV.VN - Vietnam is experiencing an intense nationwide heatwave as scorching temperatures continue to spread across the country on May 13, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

From the northern plains to the southern provinces, hot and dry conditions are dominating the weather pattern, with several areas recording temperatures above 38°C.

The most severe conditions are currently affecting the North-central and Central regions, where daytime temperatures are ranging between 35°C and 37°C. In mountainous western areas, the heat has become even more extreme, with temperatures climbing beyond 38°C in some locations.

Combined with humidity levels dropping to around 45 to 50%, the weather becomes increasingly uncomfortable and dangerous for residents and outdoor workers.

Southern localities are also continuing to endure widespread heat. The southeastern region has recorded some of the highest temperatures in the country, with many areas surpassing 37°C. Meteorologists expect the hot weather in Southern Vietnam to remain in place until at least May 15 or 16.

After several days of thunderstorms, Northern Vietnam is beginning to enter a new hot spell. Weather forecasters said localiaed heat above 35°C appeared in parts of the region on May 13, while the heatwave is expected to expand across the Red River Delta on May 14.

Temperatures in lowland northern provinces are forecast to range from 35°C to 36°C, with some locations potentially exceeding 36°C.

In Hanoi, residents are expected to face two consecutive days of intense sunshine and oppressive heat. Forecasts indicate that temperatures on May 14 and 15 could reach around 35°C during the day, while nighttime temperatures are expected to remain high at 27°C to 28°C.

Although temperatures may ease slightly on May 16, hot and humid conditions are likely to continue before thunderstorms return from May 17 onward.

Weather experts noted that the temperatures reported in official forecasts are measured under standard meteorological conditions. In reality, temperatures experienced outdoors, particularly in heavily urbanised areas filled with concrete buildings and asphalt roads, can feel 2°C to 4°C hotter. Residents in major cities may experience perceived temperatures approaching 40°C during peak afternoon hours.

Authorities warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can pose serious health risks, including dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Elderly people, children and outdoor workers are considered the most vulnerable groups during the ongoing heatwave.

They also caution that rising electricity demand during the hot weather could increase the likelihood of fires and electrical accidents in residential neighborhoods.

According to meteorologists, the seasonal transition period could also trigger dangerous thunderstorms in several regions. Sudden downpours may be accompanied by lightning, hail, strong winds and localized whirlwinds, creating additional risks after days of extreme heat.

The current heatwave in Northern Vietnam is expected to continue through approximately May 15, while Central Vietnam could experience prolonged hot weather lasting until around May 17 before temperatures gradually begin to decrease.

Meteorologists advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day and continue monitoring official weather updates as conditions evolve.
