Health Ministry warns about COVID-19 resurgence amid global rise

VOV.VN - The Ministry of Health (MoH) of Vietnam has demanded close monitoring and the enhancement of the detection and treatment of COVID-19 cases locally as the disease remains complex around the world.

The MoH cited a World Health Organisation (WHO) report, saying between April 1 and April 28, the world recorded 25,463 coronavirus cases, with more than 7,000 cases detected in Brazil and more than 5,000 cases in the United Kingdom.

Notably, as many as 53,676 cases and 16 related deaths were reported in Thailand, a neighbour of Vietnam from January 1 to May 10.

According to Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health, although case numbers stand high due to the rise of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant, the virus generally causes mild symptoms.

In Vietnam, since the beginning of the year there have been 148 cases recorded in 27 provinces and cities, with no deaths.

The MoH warned there was a slight increase in the number of cases in the past three weeks, with an average of 20 cases per week, although no concentrated outbreaks have been recorded.

It stated that mass gatherings during the April 30 - May 1 national holiday period may contribute to rising infection rates.

However, it noted, there may not be an increase in severe cases due to the variant of the COVID-19 virus.

To cope with the risk of a possible COVID-19 resurgence, the MoH suggested that local authorities issue strong recommendations at tourist attractions and public places in order to remind people of the need of wearing face masks and washing their hands frequently.
