HCM City steps up dengue prevention amid surge in cases and deaths
VOV.VN - As dengue fever cases continue to rise sharply and six deaths have been reported since the beginning of the year, Ho Chi Minh City is intensifying efforts to control and prevent the spread of the disease.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Centre for Disease Control (HCDC), the city has recorded 14,370 dengue infections since early 2025, a 153% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Notably, six fatalities have been documented, including three in former Ho Chi Minh City, two in former Binh Duong province and one in former Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. Both Binh Duong and Ba Ria – Vung Tau are now part of Ho Chi Minh City.
During the week of June 30 to July 6 alone, the city reported 838 new cases, an increase of 43 cases from the previous week. The highest numbers were seen in HCMC (former boundaries), Binh Duong, and Ba Ria–Vung Tau.
The number of severe cases requiring hospitalisation is also on the rise at major hospitals. Children’s Hospital 1 has reported 108 cases of dengue shock syndrome in the first half of the year, up nearly 95% year on year. Children’s Hospital 2 has treated 92 inpatients, including 19 severe cases.
HCDC warned that the city is currently in the peak of the rainy season, creating ideal conditions for mosquito-borne diseases to spread. Without sustained efforts to eliminate breeding grounds and control outbreaks, there is a high risk of secondary transmission chains forming.
Municipal health authorities have implemented a series of intensified measures, including strengthening monitoring and containment of outbreaks in communities; assessing high-risk locations and guiding households in disease prevention; and promoting public awareness and encouraging the use of the "Online Health" app to report mosquito breeding sites.
Residents are urged to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, clean their environment, especially after rain, and seek medical attention immediately if they develop a fever. Self-treatment at home is strongly discouraged.
