HCM City looks for more support from Japan

Ho Chi Minh City hopes to receive more support from Japan to implement flood prevention projects and construct rainwater drainage systems, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Dinh La Thang told Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Tourism Keiichi Ishii.

In a meeting with the Japanese official in Tokyo on April 7, Thang, who is on a visit to Japan, appreciated the Japanese Government’s assistance for projects to improve the water environment in Ho Chi Minh City.

He said Ho Chi Minh City is suffering from severe impacts of climate change, adding that many areas in the city are flooded whenever there is rain or tide.

According to Thang, Ho Chi Minh City is home to over 1,000 projects invested by Japanese enterprises with a total investment of over US$355 billion.

For his part, Keiichi Ishii stressed that his country wants to continue cooperating with Ho Chi Minh City in projects to upgrade and develop infrastructure, including those on water supply and drainage.

The same day, the Vietnamese official paid a courtesy visit to Japanese Foreign Minister Kishida Fumio, who expressed his belief that Ho Chi Minh City will continue to be an attractive destination for Japanese investors in the time ahead.

Thang affirmed that Ho Chi Minh City attaches special importance to relations with Japan, hoping that Japanese firms will increase investment in the city.
