By 2020, the transport network of Ho Chi Minh City will be upgraded to help turn the city into a national hub and a large trade and service centre in Southeast Asia.

Under the 2020 plan for transport development in Ho Chi Minh City and the post 2020 vision approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on January 22, the city’s transport network will be built in the form of an “open city”, which will link new urban areas, satellite urban areas and industrial parks, to fully uphold the socio-economic strengths of the city and the region.

In terms of road transport, the city will build highways linking the HCM City-Vung Tau, and HCM City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay-Da Lat, new belt roads, and four flyovers.

Fourteen pedestrian bridges and railroad bridges will be built across the Sai Gon river, while one pedestrian tunnel and one underground tunnel will also be built to link HCM City to Thu Thiem.

Rail development will include a trans-Asia railway route from HCM City to Loc Ninh and Cambodia, a western belt railway from An Binh railway station to My Tho and Can Tho, a railway linking the national highway to Hiep Phuoc and Cat Lai ports, and an underground system.

Waterway transport will also be improved and upgraded, while Nhon Duc river port will be built to better meet the demand for cargo transport from the Mekong River delta, especially for traveling to Hiep Phuoc sea port.

Meanwhile, Tan Son Nhat international airport will be built into a transit airport for the region and the world.
