According to the census, the city’s outlying Ba Vi district, which includes a number of mountainous communes, has the lowest population density of 576 persons per sq.km. The highest density was found in the urban district of Dong Da with 36,550 persons per sq.km.

The whole city has total population of some 6.45 million and a density of 1,926 persons per sq.km. 

The outlying district of Tu Liem has the largest population, at 371,247, 1.9 times higher than the figure reported 10 years ago. 

Dong Da followed with 356,504 people and the out-lying Son Tay town has the smallest population with 116,967. 

Also according to the census, the urban population amounts to 2.63 million or 40.8 percent of the city’s total population as compared to 34.2 percent reported ten years ago.

The city’s urban population represents nearly half of the Red River delta’s total population, and 10.37 percent of the figure for the whole country. 

As of August last year, Hanoi merged with the neighbouring province of Ha Tay and parts of Hoa Binh and Vinh Phuc provinces, tripling its areas to 3,300 sq.km and doubling its population to 6.45 million.
