As the election of deputies to the 12th National Assembly, which takes every five years, is drawing near, Hanoi voters are studying the list of candidates carefully to select competent, virtuous and devoted ones to the country’s most powerful State agency to meet their requirements. Let’s see what they have in mind from VOVNews reporter Pham Hoa.

Nguyen Thi Hong Nguyen, a member of polling station No4 in Nga Tu So ward: Deputies must represent voters and people’ interests

All preparations for the election at our polling station have been completed. In addition to the list of eligible voters, we have also made public the list of candidates and sent their biographies to families to study in advance. We have organised meetings with voters to answer their queries about the election law and instruct them to vote properly. In addition, we have also gathered their opinions on pressing social issues and sent them to the ward administration and Fatherland Front Committee.

Nguyen Khanh Toan, a pensioner of Phan Chu Trinh ward: It is voters’ task to select prospective candidates

The election is of great importance as Vietnam has just joined the World Trade Organisation. To have a strong National Assembly, it is imperative to select competent, devoted and trusted candidates. As a Vietnamese citizen, I am aware of studying and selecting prospective candidates. Many bills have been adopted at the 10th and 11th National Assemblies, facilitating production and business activities of State and private economic sectors, and improving people’s living conditions significantly. It is hoped that candidates, if elected, will continue to contribute positively to NA activities and help the legislative body to make important decisions on national development.

Nguyen Kim Hien, a local inhabitant in Vinh Ho residential quarter: We trust those who will be elected

We are pleased at the increased qualifications of NA deputies in recent tenures. However, several of them have not won people’s trust. When running the campaign, they promised a lot, but after being elected they did not make good on their promise. Therefore, we really hope that candidates to be elected this time must fulfill their responsibility towards the people, that means they must grasp the situation at the grassroots level and reflect voters’ aspirations before the NA.

Tran Bich Ngoc, principal of the Mang Non Pre-school of Hoan Kiem precinct: More attention should be paid to improving teachers’ living conditions

As a voter, I hope that candidates to be elected will pay more attention to all aspects of life, including school infrastructure and teachers’ living conditions. One of the major tasks of pre-school teachers is to take care of children, but degraded infrastructure facilities will affect the quality of teaching as well as children’s health.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Dung, an environmental worker: New deputies will be closer to the people.

To prepare for the Election Day (May 20), we have had to work overtime to ensure all streets and lanes are clean and beautiful. I hope that new deputies will really be closer to the people and further understand our work. They should make proposals to the National Assembly to improve the living conditions of the people and our workers in particular.

Nguyen Tien Manh from the Thanh Tri Agriculture Joint Stock Company: We pin high hopes on candidates to be elected this time.

This is the first NA election after Vietnam has joined the WTO, therefore it will affect the results of the voting. As entrepreneurs we need a consistent and transparent legal system to support our activities. We pin high hopes on candidates to be elected this time.

Nguyen Minh Tuan, director of the Hoang Tuan Co. Ltd.: New deputies must be competent, virtuous.

I hope new NA deputies must be competent and virtuous representatives that listen to others attentively. Thereafter they will reflect voters’ wills and aspirations to the legislative body. They must be pioneers in the fight against social vices, including corruption. The more we have such deputies, the more the nation develops. In the list of candidates made public at our polling station, I found that most of them are in their 30s with high qualifications. In the current international integration process, the country is in dire need of these deputies.

Tran Thuy Huong, a student at the private University of Business Administration: More attention should be paid to job creation for students

This election is more important than the previous one as Vietnam has just joined the WTO. This means we have more options for our future careers. However, we hope that candidates to be elected this time will pay more attention to job generation for young people and students who should be equally recruited to State agencies.
