Hanoi to build VND46 trillion under-river road tunnel
VOV.VN - The Hanoi Transportation Project Management Board has recently submitted a proposal to construct a road tunnel beneath the Red River along the Ring Road 2.5 axis with a total estimated cost of VND46,534 billion (nearly US$1.8 billion).
The proposal is part of a broader report submitted to the municipal administration, outlining several bridge and tunnel projects across the Red River that are now in the planning stage and expected to begin investment preparation in 2026.
The road tunnel is expected to comprise two sections. The northern section starts from Park Street in the Ciputra urban area (Phu Thuong ward) and ends at the intersection with National Highway 5 (Vinh Thanh commune). Meanwhile, the southern section begins at Linh Nam street near its intersection with Nguyen Khoai street and ends at Ly Thanh Tong street near Giap Hai street (Bat Trang commune).
The report also highlights additional projects that are currently in the investment preparation phase. One of these is the Khuyen Luong Bridge, which will begin at the intersection of Tam Trinh Road and Ring Road 3 in Yen So ward, Hanoi, and will end along the cultural heritage and tourism route by the Red River in Phung Cong commune (Hung Yen province). The project has an estimated investment of VND11,484 billion.
Another project under study is the Phu Xuyen Bridge on the Cho Ben – Yen My expressway with total calculated costs of VND10,000 billion. This bridge is designed to enhance connectivity between key transport corridors, including National Highway 1A, the Phap Van – Cau Gie expressway, the Hung Yen – Thai Binh expressway, and the Hanoi – Hai Phong expressway, and to help ease congestion on the Phap Van – Cau Gie route.
According to the city’s planning scheme, Hanoi will have 22 bridges and tunnels crossing the Red River, nine of which have been completed. In 2025, the city is implementing seven bridges, planning mid-term investment for six more, and adding another six to the long-term plan.
These transportation projects align with Hanoi’s strategic goals of improving connectivity, reducing congestion, and strengthening regional integration. Their implementation will depend on technical assessments, funding arrangements, and approval from relevant agencies.
