Over the past year, the Japanese Government has helped the capital city of Hanoi build its Integrated Development and Environment Programme (HAIDEP).

Under the programme, Japanese experts have proposed 179 transport development projects, including 140 urban projects and 39 regional projects with an estimated investment of US$22.5 billion.

Of the total, investment in urban transport development is approximately US$14 billion, including US$7.7 billion for road transport and US$5.6 billion for urban mass rapid transit (UMRT) network and infrastructure construction including clearance and compensation.

Accordingly, Hanoi will have eight radial arterial roads and four ring roads. The eight radial arterial roads include National Highway No1 (northern and southern sections), National Highway No5 (to Hai Phong city), National Highway No3 (to Thai Nguyen city), National Highway No2 (to Vinh Phuc town), National Highway No32 (to Phu Tho town), National Highway No6 (to Hoa Binh town) and the Lang-Hoa Lac Express Way.

The urban mass rapid transit network has four routes: Ngoc Hoi-Yen Vien, Nhu Quynh; Ha Dong-Noi Bai, Soc Son; Hoa-Lac-Hai Ba Trung, Ba Dinh; and Tu Liem-Co Bi and Noi Bai.

If these projects are undertaken, traffic congestion will no longer occur in Hanoi, said Japanese experts.
