Hai Phong: Nearly six tonnes of Khat leaves burned

Some 5.6 tonnes of Khat leaves were burned in May Chai ward, Ngo Quyen district, in the northern port city of Hai Phong on December 27.

The Khat leaves were seized by local customs officers in 2017.

The amount includes more than 3 tonnes of Khat leaves found in a container on the ship Spirit of Manila en route to the Nam Hai Dinh Vu port on April 2 and 2.6 tonnes in a container on the ship Mia Shulte, heading to Tan Vu port on September 28.

Khat leaves contain Cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant, which is said to cause strong euphoria.
