H5N1 outbreak hits Dak Lak poultry farm

VOV.VN - An outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza has been confirmed at a farm in Ea Knop commune, central highland Dak Lak province, prompting the culling of hundreds of chickens, according to the provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine.

According to an epidemiological investigation, the household had sold 1,900 chickens in mid-June, including 200 to a buyer using a vehicle transporting ducks of unknown origin. Around July 10, approximately 100 of the remaining chickens began showing symptoms of disease and subsequently died. Testing confirmed the presence of influenza A (H5N1).

Local authorities promptly launched inspections and implemented containment measures. Notably, none of the infected chickens had been vaccinated against avian influenza.

All infected chickens were culled, and the barn was disinfected using lime and chemical sprays. To curb the outbreak, the Ea Knop commune People's Committee has been instructed to conduct a full census of poultry households and flocks, and to step up public awareness of avian flu vaccination.

The affected farm is now under a 45-day quarantine, with restocking prohibited during this period. Meanwhile, Dak Lak’s Center for Disease Control has taken samples from the household members to monitor potential human transmission.

Amid unpredictable weather patterns, local authorities are urging farmers to stay vigilant about disease prevention and ensure that all poultry flocks are fully vaccinated.
